Buccal fat removal at Clínica do Nariz e Face
What buccal fat removal is
Buccal fat removal (bichectomy) is the surgery that removes part of the buccal fat pads, which sit inside the cheeks. With less volume in that area, the face looks slimmer, the cheekbones stand out and the contour of the face becomes more defined.
The surgery is performed from inside the mouth, so it leaves no visible scars. It can be done under local or general anaesthesia, especially when combined with other surgeries, such as rhinoplasty or chin surgery.
It is indicated for people with full cheeks in the lower part of the face, a stable weight and realistic expectations. At the consultation, the surgeon assesses the face as a whole, because not all round cheeks are due to buccal fat.
Care after buccal fat removal
Recovery
In the first few days it is normal to have swelling and some bruising on the cheeks, which improves with cold compresses. In the first 48 hours, food should be liquid or soft. Discomfort is controlled with paracetamol.
Most people return to work after about 6 days. Intense exercise should only be resumed 4 weeks after surgery.
