What mentoplasty is

Mentoplasty is the surgery that changes the projection or size of the chin. The face works as a whole: a small chin makes the nose look bigger, and an overly prominent chin unbalances the profile. That is why mentoplasty is often planned together with rhinoplasty, so that the nose, lips and chin are in harmony.

There are two main types. In augmentation mentoplasty, a silicone implant of about 3 to 4 cm, or a graft from the patient’s own tissue, is placed to give the chin more projection. The implant can be removed later, under local anaesthesia, if the patient wishes. In reduction mentoplasty, the chin bone is reshaped to reduce its volume.

The surgery is performed by Prof. Dr. Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira, in hospital, in the Porto area, and the consultation can take place in Porto or Braga. At the consultation, the facial simulation shows the effect of the chin on the profile.

Recovery

Recovery from mentoplasty is usually straightforward. In the first few days it is normal to have swelling and some altered sensation in the chin, which improves with time. Ice helps reduce the swelling. Relative rest is recommended for 7 to 10 days, with a gradual return to light activities, and soft, cold meals in the first week. If it is performed together with rhinoplasty, the recovery from both surgeries happens at the same time.
