What a facelift is

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is the surgery that rejuvenates the middle and lower face and the neck. With age, the skin, fat and muscles of the face descend: the cheeks lose volume, jowls appear along the jawline and the neck loses definition. A facelift repositions these tissues where they used to be, rather than just pulling the skin tight.

The goal is a younger, more rested face that is still recognisable: you keep your expression, you just look less tired. In selected cases, a less extensive mini-lift can be performed. A facelift is often combined with a brow lift, for the upper third, and with blepharoplasty, for the eyelids.

At Clínica do Nariz e Face, facelifts are performed by Prof. Dr. Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira, a facial plastic surgeon who performs this surgery regularly.

Neck lift and neck liposuction

When the main problem is the neck, a neck lift can be performed: the surgeon brings the neck muscles back together (platysmaplasty) and removes excess skin and fat, restoring definition to the angle between the chin and the neck.

In cases of a double chin with good skin quality, liposuction under the chin, through an incision of about one centimetre, may be enough. It is sometimes combined with chin surgery, to balance the profile.
