What otoplasty is

Otoplasty is the surgery that gives the ears a new shape. The most frequent case is prominent ears, where the ears stick out too far from the head. Other changes in the shape of the ear are also corrected.

In children, the surgery is often performed before starting school, around the age of 6, to prevent the ears from becoming a target for teasing and affecting self-esteem. But it can be performed at any age, and many adults have it after years of discomfort.

As an ENT surgeon, Prof. Dr. Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira knows the ear in detail and performs this surgery regularly, in hospital, in the Porto area. The consultation can take place in Porto or Braga.

Aesthetic Ear Correction

How otoplasty is performed

The incision is made behind the ear, so the scar is hidden. The surgeon reshapes the cartilage, removing the “memory” of its old shape, and fixes the ear in its new position, closer to the head and with a natural contour.

Otoplasty recovery

Care after surgery is decisive for the result. For about 6 to 8 weeks, you need to sleep with the ears protected by a headband, so they do not fold when you turn in bed. The discomfort is mild and is controlled with simple medication.
