“How much does rhinoplasty cost?” is, alongside pain and recovery, the question we receive most. And it is a fair question: rhinoplasty is a significant investment and nobody likes going in blind. The honest answer is that there is no single price, and any clinic that advertises a fixed price before seeing your nose is oversimplifying.
In this article we explain why the price varies, what should be included in a serious quote and why, at Clínica do Nariz e Face, the price is presented at the consultation, after examining the nose and doing the 3D simulation of the result.
Why there is no fixed price list
Every nose is different and every surgery is planned to measure. The final cost depends mainly on five factors:
- Complexity of the case. Correcting a hump on the bridge is different from rebuilding a tip, straightening a crooked nose or treating a nose with very thick skin. The more structures need to be worked on, the more theatre time and technique the surgery requires.
- First surgery or revision. A revision rhinoplasty, to correct the result of a previous surgery, is almost always more complex. Cartilage grafts are often needed, and the surgical time is longer.
- Correction of breathing. When there is a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or weak nasal valves, the surgery becomes a septorhinoplasty, which treats aesthetics and function at the same time.
- Technique used. Ultrasonic rhinoplasty and preservation rhinoplasty use specific equipment and require advanced training. They allow more natural results and more comfortable recoveries.
- Operating theatre and anaesthesia. Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia, in a hospital setting, with a dedicated anaesthesia team. These costs are part of the total.
What should be included in the quote
When comparing quotes, make sure you are comparing the same thing. A lower price may simply leave out essential parts. A complete quote should include:
- the fees of the surgeon and the team;
- the anaesthesia and the anaesthesiologist;
- the operating theatre and, if needed, the overnight stay;
- the surgical material, including splints and silicone tubes;
- the post-operative follow-up consultations throughout the first year.
At Clínica do Nariz e Face, the quote presented at the consultation includes the surgery, the anaesthesia and the follow-up consultations. At the consultation we also explain the payment options available.
Why the price is only defined at the consultation
It is not possible to quote a rhinoplasty by phone or from a photograph, just as it is not possible to plan the surgery without examining the nose. At the consultation, Prof. Dr. Miguel Gonçalves Ferreira:
- listens to what bothers you and what you expect from the surgery;
- examines the nose outside and inside, to see whether there are breathing problems to correct;
- carries out the 3D simulation with Crisalix, from photographs of your face, to show you the expected result and align expectations;
- defines the surgical plan and the most suitable technique for your case;
- presents the complete quote, with everything included.
Only after these steps does it make sense to talk about prices, because only then is it known what will be done. You leave the consultation with the plan, the simulation and the quote, and decide calmly. Read more about what the first rhinoplasty consultation is like and about facial simulation.
Low prices: when to be wary
Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult plastic surgeries to do well and one of the most difficult to correct when it goes wrong. A revision costs more than a well-done first surgery, in money and in recovery time. That is why, more than the price, what should weigh on the decision is the surgeon’s experience and dedication to rhinoplasty. We have gathered the criteria in the guide How to choose a rhinoplasty surgeon in Porto.
Warning signs: prices advertised before any consultation, quotes that do not itemise what is included, pressure to book the surgery on the same day or time-limited discounts.
Frequently asked questions
Can you give me a price by phone or email?
No, because the price depends on the surgical plan, and the plan is only defined after examining the nose at the consultation.
Does the consultation oblige me to have the surgery?
No. You leave the consultation with the plan, the 3D simulation and the quote, and decide whenever you wish.
Does the quote include the consultations after surgery?
Yes. Post-operative follow-up is part of the price presented.
Are there payment options?
Yes. The available options are explained at the consultation.
Is rhinoplasty covered by insurance?
The aesthetic component is not. When there is a functional problem, such as a deviated septum, the situation is analysed case by case at the consultation.
